Skincare for Atopic Baby Eczema
Baby eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that affects many infants and young children. It causes dry, itchy, and inflamed patches of skin to develop on the body.
Symptoms: The most common symptom of baby eczema is itchy skin. The affected areas may also be red, dry, cracked, and scaly. In some cases, there may be oozing or weeping from the skin. The location of the eczema can vary depending on the baby's age. In newborns, it typically appears on the face and scalp (often called cradle cap). In older babies and toddlers, it's more common on the inner elbows and knees, wrists, ankles, and neck.
Causes: The exact cause of baby eczema is unknown, but it is thought to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Babies with a family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies are more likely to develop it. Certain environmental triggers can also worsen eczema, such as dry air, harsh soaps and detergents, and overheating.
Treatment: There is no cure for baby eczema, but there are treatments that can help manage the symptoms and prevent flare-ups. The mainstays of treatment are emollients (moisturisers) and topical corticosteroids (steroid creams). In some cases, other medications such as antihistamines or antibiotics may be needed.
Eczema skincare: You can help manage your baby's eczema by keeping your baby's skin moisturised. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to your baby's skin several times a day, especially after bathing. Bathe your baby in lukewarm water for no more than 10 minutes. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid harsh soaps.
With proper care, most babies with eczema will outgrow the condition by the time they are school-aged. However, some children may continue to experience flare-ups throughout their lives. Our dermatologist recommended eczema skincare products help to calm the symptoms and manage your baby's eczema.
